FLAGLER BEACH, Fla. – Crews on Monday will begin the demolition of Flagler Beach’s iconic pier.
The pier, which was first built in 1928, was severely damaged during Hurricane Ian in 2022.
“It’ll be 28 feet total height and that in theory takes it out of the 500 year storm and wave action associated with 500 year storms because it’s wave action that pops up and destroys the pier from the underside,” said Flagler Beach City Manager Dale Martin.
It’s taken years to come up with plans for the project and to secure federal funding to make the reconstruction process possible.
“It’ll be 800 feet long, so about twice as long as what’s out there right now. It’ll be five feet wider,” Martin said.
In 2021, city leaders agreed to replace the wooded structure with a concrete one.
“First, they’ll build a trestle,” Martin said. “Basically they build a pier to then use that pier to dismantle the existing pier and build the new one. So, the trestle construction will be first.”
The project is expected to take a year and a half to two years before it is completed.
